Font Pallette

I have researched some fonts which I find suitable for my magazine, titled 'NOIZE'. I used the website 'dafont' in order to experiment with a selection of font styles and I have listed them below.

I have chosen to keep my font basic, here I have experimented with a few basic black fonts which has helped me gain ideas for which font would be most suitable.

This is my chosen font which will be my masthead for my music magazine. I have chosen this font as it is very distinct, therefore allowing my reader's of the magazine to easily identify my magazine simply by the style of masthead, although the colour of this font will change for my front cover. This font is simple although stands out due to the dramatic underline                                                                                                                                                                           and classic bold characters. I will use this font                                                                                               throughout my contents page and double page                                                                                               spread mastheads. This will allow me to maintain the                                                                                     same style throughout my magazine, although I have                                                                                     chosen second font which will be used for smaller                                                                                         text such as page numbers and my double page                                                                                             spread item.

This is the font that I will be using to write my double page
spread and also I will be using it to write smaller text such as page numbers and small sub headings. I have chose this font as it is very simple, although keeps in with the urban theme which my magazine has set. The colour of this font may also alter.

This is the font I have chosen for my cover lines and other larger text to be featured on my magazine. It is again a rather simplistic font, however it will be fitting in with the theme of my magazine, and it is not to dissimilar from my page number and writing font. This font will be featured throughout my magazine, where suitable. The colour of this font my also alter.

Here are my fonts that I gathered but I have decided not to use, due to the style of my magazine, these fonts would not be suitable to fit into my 'urban' theme, therefore I have disregarded them on that basis, but I have listed them below to show which fonts I disregarded.

I will not be using this font as I do not feel it has a 'urban' style which I desire for my magazine, and rather it would be more suitable for a rock magazine.

This is the same for this font, I feel that it would be more suited to a heavy metal magazine, due to the harsh style of writing, it would be best suited to a heavy metal magazine.

I feel that this font would be suitable for a urban themed magazine, however not the style of music that my magazine will be featuring, as it is written in a graffiti style as it is very bold.

This font will not be featured in my magazine as I feel it would be best suited to a pop magazine due to the very rounded lettering, and would not fit in with a urban theme that my magazine is creating.

Both of these fonts are very similar and I feel would work well in a rock/heavy metal magazine, due to the washed out paint appearance of the letters, giving it a very reckless feel.

Conventions, Producer and Target Audience

Conventions, Producer and Target Audience
The conventions that I plan on keeping the same for my magazine are the main image, that it will be covering the majority of my front cover, with the masthead tucking behind my main image, as I have shown on my flat plan which I have linked below; Front Cover Flat Plan. Although as my cover lines are shown to be on the right hand side, this may alter on my actual magazine by changing sides/position. The colours used for my fonts will be changing on my actual magazine to suit the style and colours of my images. Although my main image and masthead will be remaining the same as I have shown on my flat plan. I will be altering my fonts such as sizes, styling and colouring depending on my main image, I will be updating my diary on my blog to show my textual development in order to suit my image on the front cover, and throughout my magazine.
The magazine publisher which I will be choosing to publish my magazine is IPC Media. I have chosen this because they publish other popular mainstream magazines, which my magazine will be. They also publish very popular magazines which a lot of young people will recognize, I am hoping that my magazine will be a popular magazine amongst young adults; therefore this magazine publisher has a lot of experience publishing popular magazines for the youth.  After having researched other magazine publishers I think that this would be the most suitable publisher for me to choose, due to my target market audience, who will be young to late 20’s, which is similar to the readers of the magazines which IPC publish. I have researched many other magazine publishers, which are displayed on my blog on this following link; Instituion Research.  This helps show why I have chosen IPC Media to produce my music magazine, due to the target market and popularity among my target market, it would be the best suited publisher for my magazine.

My target market is young adults (age 15-25), and of both sexes. The interests of my target market would be R&B music, shopping for popular clothing brands, interested in the latest trends and gossip. My magazine will be relatively main stream including popular trends and artists, which will attract my target market.  I have carried out a survey which helped me to determine what features to include in my magazine to aim at my target market, which I have linked; Survey. Here I have provided the questions and statistics that I gathered from using this survey.

The Media platforms that would sell my magazine would be places such as WH Smiths, due to my magazine being rather mainstream it would be available at large convenience stores. I will also make my magazine available online, providing weekly updates and extras for my reader, as it is aimed at young adults, technology is popular during this generation, therefore my magazine could be easily accessed via Iphone or Ipad, allowing me to target my audience quickly and easily. Large convenience stores would be willing to sell my product due to the large target audience, as it is a main stream magazine and not specialized or alternative, it would be appealing to a larger audience as it features popular music artists, therefore selling it in a popular convenience store would help boost my sales and recognition.

Photo Shoot Images

This is my front cover image. I taken this image in a photography studio. My model was briefed and styled to suit my urban theme magazine. This photo will then be edited using photo shop into black and white, and then I will be able to touch up any parts of this photo in order to make it appear more professional using patch up tools on photo shop and adjusting the brightness, contrast, hue and saturation. I like the angle this photo was taken at, and as the backdrop is black, when edited into black and white, it will look appropriate.

These three images will be featured on my contents page. They will be edited to appear like a strip of images, altering their colour, brightness and contrast to create a suitable edit. I will be using photo shop to edit these photos, posting a diary update to how I     edited them. These images were taken at a more close up angle, as this is different to my front cover image. I will be using other images on my contents page, of other models.

This image will feature on my contents page, I will edit the hue/saturation, brightness/contrast in order to suit my contents page. I take this image with another friend in a photography studio, my model was briefed and styled accordingly.

This image may be featured on my contents page, as I do not wish to have the same model throughout all of my magazine. I will edit this image using photo shop adjusting the hue/saturation brightness and contrast to make this image appear more professional.

Each of these images are potential main images for my double page spread article. I am using the same model from my front cover and contents page to be featured in a exclusive interview for my double page spread. I may be using a full length shot image for my double page spread, as it is a different camera angle used compared to my contents page and my front cover, as they were using mid shot and a close up. Here I have listed a few images which I may use.

This is a mid shot image, which I may use for my double page spread. I like the lighting on this image and how the shadow is visible on the backdrop. All images I use I will edit on photo shop, using various tools.
Here I will list the images that I will not be using for my magazine, due to the angle, lighting and pose not being correct. Some of these images were also try out shoots, when I was discovering what lens would be most suitable and how I want to style my model.

Update Diary

This is a update of the progress I have made today. I began to style my model for my magazine today and take photos in the photography studio. Here I have placed a few try out shots that I took from today's shoot, I have also linked below the page of full images that I took to show my development and progress. Photo Shoot Images

Location Recce

Location Recce
The potential hazards that could take place when shooting inside of the photography studio may  be things such as trailing cables for the lighting, I will brief my model(s) for any potential hazards that could take place inside the studio, making them aware of any trailing cables and the to ensure that they and I take care when walking on the backdrop as it could be a slippery surface hazard. When shooting outside me and my model(s) must be aware of any traffic that may be surrounding us.  Ensuring both me and my model(s) are aware of any of these hazards will help minimize the risk, we will also be filling out risk assessment forms.  When shooting photographs outside, the weather may impact our availability to do so. If it is raining we will be unable to shoot our photographs outside, although we will then be able to use the photography studio to take some images there. Our ideal time to take images outdoors will be through the day; therefore the natural lightening will make the images a higher quality, adjusting my camera lens accordingly. My desired background when taking photos outdoors will be a standard brick wall, it may have graffiti on as I am looking to create a natural urban feel.

When using the photography studio I will need to book it, therefore I will need to ensure both me and my model are available on the same day/time. When shooting my photographs outside, I will choose a quiet area with little traffic to ensure that other people/objects do not distract my model and spoil the image. I will plan when I will be taking the images with my models and book out photography studio and let them know the location when photographing outdoors. As I am using the photography studio and the outdoors, I will be able to use one or the other if the weather is bad or I am unable to use the studio, giving me more chance to take my images.

Photo Shoot Planning

What emotional impact do you want your photography do have upon the reader and how will you achieve this?

The emotional impact that I desire is that it will entice the reader into my magazine, for example, having my model to look directly into the camera to give the effect that the image is looking at the reader, making it very intense. My models facial expressions may change, for example, they may be laughing into the camera, giving the page an exciting vibe.
What personnel do you need? Who are you going to photograph?

I will be using a male model to be my main image, the styling of this photo will create a urban vibe, using a young model as my target market will be young adult and of both sexes. I will be using a photography studio for the majority of my photographs, although I will be taking some photographs outside.
What props will you need?

The props that I will be using are a stool, which I will use during the photography studio shoot as I want my model to be sitting during some photographs. I will also be requiring my model to change outfits during this shoot. I will require no further props inside the photography studio, although outside I may require a my model to use a cigarette.
How are you going to emphasise colour?

I will be using Photoshop to touch up/edit my images. My main image for the front cover will be in black and white, as it is covering up all of my front cover, with the colours coming from the fonts used on this page. To touch up and enhance the colour of my images throughout the magazine I will be using Photoshop. I will also be using this programme to touch up the colour of my fonts to suit the theme of my magazine.
Have you briefed your personnel/models?

I briefed my models to understand the purpose/style of the shoot, giving them a understanding of the props that may be used both outside and in the photography studio, filling in risk assessment forms for my shoots.
What lighting will you need? Any other equipment?

I will be using lighting in the photography studio which will enhance the shadowing when my image is in black and white for my main image. I will be using natural lighting when outside of the studio, although adjusting my camera lens to create effect.
Where will you shoot? Will you need a backdrop?
In the studio I will be using a black backdrop, as this will be most suitable when editing my image into black and white. When shooting outside the studio I will be using a brick wall.
Mise-en-scene - Make-up? Costumes? Props?

My models will require to change outfits, although the costumes will be simple/normal day wear which will be suitable for a R&B magazine for example popular clothing/brands. The props that will be used is a stool for my model to be sitting for some photographs inside the studio and a cigarette for the model outside the studio, creating a urban/young vibe.

Photoshop Practice

This is a photo I have used in order to practice and develop my photo shop skills. This allowed me to also experiment with colour schemes to use for my final magazine and fonts. By completing this exercise it has also allowed me to gain further experience as when I first used photo shop my skills were very limited and amateur, this was shown on a previous post on my blog which  I have linked, http://jenniferbaisterasmedia.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/photoshop-skills.html

I was able to cut out around this photo using photo shop allowing me to hide the masthead behind the main image. Although I feel that I may have hidden the masthead slightly too much, this is something I will change on my final magazine front cover. I am also researching other fonts which I could use as I feel the one used in this photo shop skills development looks very amateur, but by completing this exercise it has allowed me to identify things which I will develop and change for my final magazine front cover.

Stage 2 Planning

Proposal Form

Describe your idea for the brief:
My magazine is going to be popular R&B music. Therefore, my magazine will be targeted at young adults/teens. A lot of the music featured in my magazine will be from popular chart music, allowing my reader to easily identify and relate to the artists featured in my magazine. My magazine will be kept up to date with the most popular R&B chart music. It will feature interviews of the most talked about artists of the current chart, and have also feature exclusives making my magazine exciting and different. My magazine will be called ‘NOIZE’ and the colour scheme will flow throughout the magazine making my magazine eye catching and easy to identify.
Genre/ sub genre: list similar texts which have inspired your thoughts
A magazine which has influenced my style of magazine is, ‘Vibe’ as this magazine features similar types of artists which I hope my magazine to feature. The layout of this magazine also caught my eye, for example the main image covers the majority of the front cover which I hope to do with my magazine, with the main image over lapping the masthead. This is a technique I have demonstrated and practised on photo shop.
Target audience: gender/ age/ characteristics/ behaviour
My target audience is young adults/teens, both male and female although typically those interested in popular R&B music compared to the more alternative scene. I will design my magazine to attract the attention of those who are interested in popular main stream magazines such as ‘Vibe’ and ‘NME’ which are both magazine which have influenced my design/style of my magazine.
Major conventions I will use
The layout of my magazine will be similar to the layout of ‘Vibe’ magazine. I will have my masthead positioned at the top left of my magazine with the main image covering the majority of the front cover and over lapping the masthead. The masthead will stand out due to the bold font which I hope to place on my magazine. The main cover line will be positioned in the middle left of my page, surrounded by other cover lines and sub headings
Conventions I may subvert/ change/ not use
I however may change the position of the cover lines to fit around the structure of the main image. I may not excessively use sub heading to attract attention to my magazine. Everything else in terms of general layout and structure (main image covering the front cover) will remain the same as presented on my flat plan. My images may differ in the idea that I may use more than one model to feature in my magazine.
Original images: what/ where/ what
I will be taking and using photos of a friend located both in college studio and outside of the building. These images will be used for my front cover and throughout my magazine. I will have a variety of photos to use to allow my magazine to have a selection of style of images.
Potential difficulties/ Plan B:
The potential difficulties that I may face are trying to take images in a variety of locations, with different styles, due to facilities/materials available. It may also be difficult to place my image on the front cover of my magazine with the masthead behind it in a professional manner. Although with the practice of photo shop I will hopefully be able to overcome these issues.

Update Diary

Today, I analysed marked student work in order to help me identify what makes a good magazine and hopefully help me gain inspiration for my own magazine. By analysing marked student work, I have been able to understand how the marks are picked up and where to ensure my magazine is the highest standard. This task has helped me understand and view how others have completed this magazine task and what marks were awarded for their work.

Contents Flatplan

This is a simple flat plan which I have created for my magazine contents page. This determines the very basic layout of my contents page although some things such as the location of the images may alter to structure around the text in my final contents page. However I have chosen this basic layout due to a lot of research of other contents page layouts which attracted me, such as 'Vibe' magazine. I have kept my masthead at the top left side of my contents page, similar to my front cover. I will also provide more than one image on my contents page which will give an insight to what is included in my magazine.

Analysing student work

Analysing Previous Student Work

Name of Magazine
Strengths
Weaknesses
Grade I awarded and reason
Shuffle

·         Overlapped text on images, making the front cover stand out
·         Has competitions advertised on front/barcode
·         Contents page with page numbers
·         Double page spread layout is eye-catching, uses the same font and colours
·         I like the way the questions on the double page spread are in a different colour font and size to the answers, making it stand out and uses a pull quote
·         Colour scheme runs throughout the magazine
·         Images are very amateur
·         Layout of front cover is messy, the main cover story does not overlap the main image very well
·         Uses a lot of actual band photos, making it less original and stand out less
·         Font is not professional looking, and uses a variety of different fonts, making it look very messy
D- I would award this magazine a grade D. One reason is due to the amateur images used and the editing, making the magazine seem lazy and unorganised. There are also spelling mistakes on the double page spread, showing a lack of proof reading and care taken to ensure that the magazine is up to standard.
Image

·         Front cover looks professional as the image is well styled and edited to suit the colour scheme of the magazine
·         Colour scheme is fitting with the rest of the magazine
·         Image led on the contents page, very professional images which are page numbered, organised layout
·         Images are professionally edited and taken
·         Double page spread is organised
·         Uses images of artists that have already been taken
·         Very image led
·         Labelled the cover story which is not professional
B- I have awarded this magazine a grade B. This magazine is by far the best compared to the other two. The images have been well taken and edited, to suit the colour scheme of the magazine. This magazine seems much organised and it is visible that a lot of effort was made to ensure this magazine looked professional. There is a good use of fonts, which seem to suit the hip hop genre of magazine. The masthead of this magazine uses the same colour scheme as the magazine and a professional font. It is also tucked behind the main image photo, demonstrating Photoshop skills.
Talent
·         Masthead stands out and font looks moderately professional
·         Good use of pull quotes
·         Colour scheme of double page spread is neatly organised
·         Very amateur images
·         Font is amateur and messy layout making it hard to determine which is meant to stand out
·         Main cover line is randomly placed on front cover with little effect
·         Too many images of celebrities used, making it look very unprofessional
·         Too many colours/styles used
E- This magazine I have awarded a E. It is very unorganised as there is a lot of different fonts and colours used, making the magazine seem randomly co-ordinated. There is also a lot of use of other artist’s images making it feel as though this magazine has copied a popular magazine but simply added photos of them onto it.

What have I learned from looking at last year’s student work?

From this task I have been able to determine what makes a magazine professional and stand out compared to amateur mistakes and layouts. I have also been able to gain ideas of what I would like for my magazine such as what sort of layout works and looks professional. By comparing a few different types of magazines, I have been able to identify for myself what makes a magazine stand out. It has also given me a chance to look at previous work and to note how others may have approached this task and what other things I may need to add to improve my magazine.

How will I apply this to my own work?

As I have studied other students work and identified the strengths and weaknesses within their work, I will be able to adapt my work to make in order to improve
