Magazine flatplan

This is the basic flat plan of my front cover. I have placed my masthead at the top left side of my magazine which my main image will overlap as it covers the whole of my front cover, therefore, the title of my magazine will be tucked behind my main image. I will have my cover lines on the right side of my front cover, again placed over my front cover image, along with the other cover lines. I have also included the layout of my barcode, as this is a essential part of producing my magazine. As this is just a general plan some things may change when I am constructing my magazine in order to look more suitable for my magazine.

Double page spread flatplan

This is my flat plan for my double page spread. I have placed my main image on the left side of the page, although my image may run over to both pages, fading out behind the text. I will have my text surrounding a pull quote with my main title of the article overlapping the image. Some things may slightly alter when producing my double page spread due to appearance to make it fit in with the theme of the magazine better. However this basic layout will be a template for me to construct my double page spread and alter things from this.

Double Page Spread

Layout
This double page spread is taken from ‘NME’ magazine featuring Lily Allen. This article is split into four columns, organised at the bottom half of the double page spread. There is a large heading which is in the form of a pull quote. The heading is very eye catching, it used bold white text with a black outline, which looks like it is in the style of a newspaper article. There is a subheading placed above the article itself giving an insight into what may be featured in the article. The heading is slightly layering over the image which is placed on the right page, overlapping onto the left page. The colour scheme is mainly black, white and red, the red being mainly from the main image of Lily Allen, allowing the image to stand out more.
Images
There is one main image on this double page spread, similar to the double page spread from ‘Q’ magazine. The image itself appears to almost be jumping out of the page due to the angel that has been used; it is a mid-shot however the model is slightly bent over appearing to be looking up slightly.
Language
The article describes how Lily Allen acted inside her own home when an  interviewer is present. There is a few expletives used in the article to demonstrate the language that Lily Allen used. The article font differs from the font used for the heading and sub heading. There are also illustrations used next to the heading. The tone of the article seems to be very informal and light hearted. Page numbers are also used in order to navigate smoothly throughout the magazine.

Double Page Spread

Layout
This double page spread featuring Solange Knowles is very different compared the previous due to the layout of photos and text. This time the text is on the bottom half of the double page spread and the images are along the top. The main image which is placed on the right page is presented in a bold red colour allowing the page to be very eye catching. There is a strip of black and white photos running along the top of the double page spread which make the magazine page fun and unique.  Similar to the ‘Q’ magazine double page spread, there is no masthead but small headings, with the most eye catching heading being a small text at the top left page.  Pull quotes are also used to make this double page spread more eye catching.  The colour scheme of this spread is mainly black, white, blue and red, the blue featured in the text may be relating to the name of the magazine and general colour scheme.
Images
This double page spread features more images than the previous in ‘Q’ magazine. Illustrations are also used underneath images relating to artists of songs, for example beneath the strip of black and white images running along the top. There is a mixture of both black and white and colour images on this double page spread. The main image being the one with the red popping out to the reader and also contrasting with the black and white images and white background.
Language
The article itself on this double page spread is in small black font, contrasting with large pull quotes above the article and the actual heading of the double page spread. The pull quote is eye catching for the reader as it features what the article is about and intrigues the reader to want to know more about the story itself.

Double Page Spread

Layout
This is a double page spread taken from the magazine ‘q’ featuring Lady Gaga.  This double page spread is presented with the image covering the left side of the page and the text on the right in three columns. They are organised running down the full of the right side of the page.  There are certain bold letters which stand out in the text columns, making the article seem more appealing and intriguing. There is no masthead to this double page spread, only a small heading which states the artists name ‘Lady Gaga.’ Layered over the text is a large ‘L’ which may be relating to the actual story itself.

The colour scheme is constant on this page, the image itself if in a sepia tone and the background to this double page spread is a much washed out white, making the image being the main part of the double page spread and standing out. The text is written in small black font, and also is the heading of the artist. The only colour on this page is the large ‘l’ which is placed over the text.
Images
The photograph which is covering the left page is of lady gaga and has been edited in a sepia tone. Lady Gaga’s outfit is very revealing and as she is only wearing black chains around her neck, which fits into the colour scheme of the magazine. The image is very intriguing, having a rather wild and eccentric vibe, the way the artists hair is styled and the dark eye makeup makes the image look very professional and eye catching.  The double page spread is very text led as it only includes one main photo  of Lady Gaga.
Languages
The font of this magazine is very contextual, it is a simple black font which is used for the main article. There are certain bold letters which stand out which are presented in the same font as the heading. The article discusses Lady Gaga’s successful previous albums. There are quotations used making the article much more interesting , there are also a few slang words used, for example ‘bloke’ when discussing Gaga’s sexuality.

Contents Preliminary task

This is my preliminary task of my contents page. Similar to the preliminary front cover, it is amateur and very basic, athough by using publisher, I have been able to construct a draft of my contents page and practice the layout for my main magazine. Hopefully this will allow me to compare to my main magazine and compare the differences and notice my improvements. I have used my contents page deconstructions in order to help give me a idea on how to construct a contents page. Although having done more research into contents pages and seeing different designs, I have been able to compare my preliminary design to identify faults and elements which I can improve. I can use this basic contents page to develop and alter, to ensure that my final contents page is much more professional and organised.

Preliminary front cover task

This is my preliminary front cover. Although it may have a few faults and be very amateur I have expressed the basic layout that I will have on my magazine. The masthead will be in the same position and I will have my main image covering my front cover. Surrounding this will be my main cover line and other cover lines and sub headings. Things may slightly alter on my main magazine although I have used publisher to design a layout for my magazine. As I have done more research into front covers and designs, I have been able to identify the faults in my preliminary front cover design. By researching front covers more, I have been able to study different styles and notice how to catch the readers eye, giving me ideas how to produce a more professional and eye catching front cover for my final design.

Update Diary

Tpday, I took these photos for my preliminary task. These photos are very amateur and simple, but by completing these tasks, I was able to set myself a template for my magazine front cover and contents page and also it has helped me to improve. I have linked my preliminary front cover and contents page below, to show my development and progress.
