My choice
The magazine publisher which I will be choosing will be IPC Media. I have chosen this because they publish other popular mainstream magazines, which my magazine will be. They also publish very popular magazines which a lot of young people will recognize.  After having researched other magazine publishers I think that this would be the most suitable publisher for me to choose, due to my target market audience, who will be young to late 20’s, which is similar to the readers of the magazines which IPC publish.

Photoshop Skills

This is something which I completed on photoshop in order to develop my basic photoshop skills. I have placed the masthead behind the image as this will be similiar to what I will be doing on my magazine front cover. I was able to add text onto this photo by layering the photo and the text ontop. I also edited the hue and brightness to change the asthetics of the original photo, finally adding on a barcode on the bottom left corner.

Contents page decontruction

Masthead
This masthead of the contents page from the magazine ‘Kerrang’ has a very similar layout to the previous contents page magazine which I have researched. The masthead itself is relatively small, however it is printed in yellow and framed with a black small background, allowing it to still stand out.
Necessary Information
This contents page includes an issue date positioned down the left side of the page running down. It also includes a telephone number of how to pre order magazines for a certain price a month, advertising this to the readers. It is printed at the bottom right of the page in a black box with red and yellow writing, allowing it to stand out.
Text
The text is positioned at the bottom half of the magazine, with red yellow and red being the main colours for this contents page, which is keeping in with the ‘rock’ theme which is the main theme of this magazine.  The text is all written underneath ‘Kerrang this week’ so the reader can easily find the page numbers and information which they need. There are many sub headings on this contents page, such as ‘feedback’ ‘news’ ‘gig guide’ and ‘features’ which allows the reader to easily navigate throughout the magazine. These sub headings are written in yellow with a black outline in order to stand out. There is also an editor’s letter down the left side of the page, with a picture of the editor, making this contents page seem very professional and organised.
Font
There is a running colour scheme featured on this contents page, as it is predominately black, yellow and red, which relates to the main colour scheme of the magazine and fits in with the ‘rock’ theme. The images are also labelled as to where certain bands will be featured throughout the magazine, making it quick and easy to navigate throughout. Underneath the features of the magazine, there are is a sentence which is giving a preview of the story featured on that page.
Images
The main image which seems to stand out the most is at the top right of the magazine, which is taken at a mid-shot angel. The model is wearing black which is contrasting with the white background.  Following the main image, there are varies other smaller images, some taken at wide shot angels to show what other bands are featured in the magazine.
Composition
This magazine has a balance of text and images, however there are slightly more images to make the magazine stand out more with small sub headings over lapping the images.
Colour
The colours of this magazine are very bold; making is very eye catching as a lot of the colours are contrasting to each other. The images used are also very colourful and bold.
Linguistics
There are a few linguistic features on this contents page such as sub headings, one of them being ‘swag’ which may give an indication of the type of age of the target market. There is also a competition to enter, for a chance to win a signed guitar by a popular artist amongst the youths.

Masthead
This masthead of the contents page from the magazine ‘Drummer’ has a very different layout compared to the previous contents page magazine which I have researched. The masthead is printed in a black bold font, contrasting with the white background. It is positioned at the top left hand side of the contents page
Necessary Information
This contents page is very much image led, although the essential information for a magazine is positioned down the left side of the page, easily displaying what pages feature which parts of the magazine
Text
The text falls down the left hand side of the page, although there is few texts compared to images, it has included the essential information a contents page magazine needs such as what page numbers feature which parts of the magazine. Sub headings are also included to allow the reader to navigate where the ‘featured’ section is of the magazine. There is also a ‘regulars’ section and ‘exclusive’ parts marked on the contents page, which is eye catching to the reader.
Font
There is a running colour scheme featured on this contents page, as it is predominately black, white and red, which relates to the main colour scheme of the magazine. Masthead
This masthead of the contents page from the magazine ‘Vibe’ has a very different layout compared to the other contents page magazine which I have researched. The masthead falls down the top right hand side of the page. It is in a white font, which is contrasting with the black/grey background, making the masthead stand out even more. The masthead is also tucking behind the main image, which is covering the whole of the contents page.
Necessary Information
Featured on the bottom right of the page, is the page number. This is presented in the same font and colour as the rest of the text on this page, making the page look professional and organised. There is also a website link placed at the bottom left hand side, which again is presented in the same font and style.
Text
The text falls down the right hand side of the page, although there is few text, it has included the essential information a contents page magazine needs such as what page numbers feature which parts of the magazine. Sub headings are also included to allow the reader to navigate where the ‘featured’ section is of the magazine.
Font
The font and style is very similar to each other on this contents page. There is a lot of black and white font colour which contrasts with each other allowing it to stand out much more. The page itself looks very organised and the style all fits together well with each other.
Images
The image covers the majority of the contents page. The image itself is very eye catching, with the most noticeable part being the models legs, which appear much more vibrant than the rest of the page. They are also shaped in a ‘v’ shape, which related to the title of the magazine which is ‘vibe.’ There is also a letter ‘v’ outlining the models legs in order to emphasis the shape of the legs. The tone of this magazine has very dark colours, which the model keeps by wearing a washed out white bodysuit. The image itself feels as though it is looking at you, as the model is looking directly into the camera, making the image much more enticing. The image is a full body shot.
Composition
This magazine is very much text led, even though there is not as great deal of text there is only one large image which covers the whole contents page. The main image is layered over the masthead as the foot of the model covers the corner of the masthead.
Colour
As previously mentioned the colours on this magazine are very dark but with the masthead contrasting to the background as it is printed in white.

Preliminary Task Front Cover Flatplan

I have kept my magazine cover very traditional with a simplistic layout, making is easier for the reader to identify where items in the magazine are located. The masthead is large at the top left of the magazine, allowing the reader to immediatley identify what genre of magazine this is and what the magazine is called, it will also be infront of the main image. My main image will cover the whole of the front page, giving the reader a further insight into what genre of magazine this is and who will be featured in it. Underneathe the main image is the main coverline, featuring what the main story in this magazine will be, this will be who is on the main image of the magazine. Following this will be any sub headings, to show other items which may be in the magazine which are not a main story, to interest lots of readers, not just one particular group. The essential information is located at the bottom right of the magazine,  this is where the reader is able to see the price of the magazine and able to purchase it with the barcode.
